Trump refused plea from Kevin McCarthy to call off MAGA mob during Capitol attack

Pollemix News – February 13, 2020
Only hours before President Trump’s impeachment trial was set to culminate, CNN released an explosive report alleging that House Leader Kevin McCarthy called President Trump as the Capitol Hill riot unfolded begging him to release a statement to call off his supporters.

The plea fell on deaf ears, however, with the conversation between the two descending into an expletive laden quarrel. According to the report, Trump dismissed McCarthy’s concerns saying simply, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.” The scornful response prompted a furious retort from House Minority Leader McCarthy who bit back, “Who the f**k do you think you are talking to?”

Republican State Representative for Washington Jaime Herrera Beutler confirmed the exchange to CNN and claimed that it was an open secret amongst congressional Republicans. Representative Herrera Beutler, who was one of the 10 GOP members who voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment, alleged that the phone call between Trump and McCarthy was a testament to the fact that Trump was not only unconcerned about the protest but actively rooting for the insurrection.

“You have to look at what he did during the insurrection to confirm where his mind was at. That line right there demonstrates to me that either he didn’t care, which is impeachable, because you cannot allow an attack on your soil, or he wanted it to happen and was OK with it, which makes me so angry,” said Herrera Beutler.

Former President Trump’s impeachment lawyers insisted that the President was unaware of the extent of the violence at the Capitol or that his Vice President Mike Pence had to be whisked away by security, however, their account was contradicted by Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville who stood by his claim that he was on the phone to President Trump as Capitol Security had to move Pence into a secure location, telling Trump “Mr. President, they just took the vice president out, I’ve got to go.” Only 10 minutes after Tuberville claimed that he told President Trump that Pence was under threat and had to be removed by security Trump tweeted “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution.”

Democrats are now demanding that the impeachment trial be extended to allow them to depose Representative Tuberville and Kevin McCarthy to ascertain whether Trump was not only aware of the danger that the riot posed but was in fact enthused by it and supportive of the protesters. Neither McCarthy or Trump have responded to the claims at this stage.

POLL: Did Trump’s rhetoric incite his supporters to attack Capitol Hill?

Democrats and Republicans continue to debate whether Trump's harsh rhetoric and repeated claims of voter fraud were responsible for inciting the violence that ensued during the January 06 Insurrection. While the former President's supporters maintain that his words did not spark the attack, Trump's detractors claim that his refusal to publicly acknowledge his election loss and his repeated claims of voter fraud whipped up his enraged supporters to assault the Capitol.
