WATCH: Pelosi breaks down discussing “white supremacist raid” on Capitol Building

Pollemix News – December 15, 2021
House speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared to break down in tears as she reflected on the Capitol Hill riot last week, labeling the incident an “assault on our democracy”. Pelosi’s press conference was her first appearance since the violent raid last week where a pro-Trump mob raided the Capitol Building, forcing Congress into hiding until order was reestablished and leaving lawmakers in fear for their lives.

The Democrat leader seemed particularly aggrieved about one particular terrorist who was adorned with a T-shirt that was a despicable homage to Auschwitz, breaking down as she harkened back to her visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau saying:

“To see this punk with his shirt on and his anti semitism that he has bragged about, to be part of of a white supremacist raid on this Capitol…” Pelosi managed to get out before pausing to compose herself.

President Trump and Speaker Pelosi have had an antagonistic relationship from the outset but the Capitol Hill riot has been the final straw for many lawmakers who have blamed Trump’s rhetoric for inciting the attack. In retaliation Pelosi has launched impeachment proceedings for the second time during Trump’s tenure and although it is unlikely to succeed the Speaker is hoping that it will prove to be the final ‘nail in the coffin’ to Trump’s political career.

Nevertheless, Trump retains strong support amongst Republican voters despite his latest travails, however, GOP leadership is distancing itself from their former flag bearer in the belief that his populist appeal is overwhelmed by the increasing toxicity of his brand. Senator Mitch McConnell who has been a strong ally of President Trump is said to be quietly supportive of the Democrats efforts to impeach leaving the President with few allies in his remaining days as Commander-in-Chief.

Democrats on the other hand now control the legislative chamber so they will be keen to push forward with Biden’s agenda whilst pushing to impeach Trump, a move which may be perceived as vindictive by the public considering that he has less than a week left in office and leave Democrats open to charges of politicking rather than leading.

POLL: Will Impeaching Trump again backfire on Democrats?

The second impeachment of Donald Trump begins today as Democrats put the former President on trial for allegedly "inciting an insurrection" that led to the January 06 Capitol Hill assault.

Trump's supporters have accused Democrats of seeking to settle political scores with a show trial impeachment of a President that has already left office and warned that they are establishing a dangerous precedent. Meanwhile, Democrats insist that Trump must face consequences for trying to subvert democracy but they are unlikely to muster the 17 Republican votes required to convict Trump in the Senate. Is the impeachment a fool's errand and will it cost Democrats politically going forward?
