US has deadliest day as daily Covid deaths top 3,000 for the first time

Pollemix News – December 10, 2020
The US crossed an unwanted milestone yesterday as Coronavirus fatalities exceeded 3,000 in a single day for the first time since the pandemic began. Sadly, Wednesday brought 3,124 deaths according to Johns Hopkins University with nearly 107,000 people hospitalized.

There has been a significant uptick in Coronavirus infections as the US enters the holiday season with the colder weather and decreased social distancing proving to be a deadly combination. Unfortunately, things are likely to get worse before they get better as the pandemic is expected to continue surging in the aftermath of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Appearing on CNN, Dr Anthony Fauci warned that the Covid crisis was heading in the wrong trajectory and “It’s likely you’re not going to see a measurable diminution for at least several weeks if not longer”.

The hardest hit states of late have been in the mid-west with South Dakota, Iowa and North Dakota having the highest fatality rate per capita. Another concern is that the daily infection rate is now regularly over 200,000 per day which is putting an incredible strain on healthcare facilities and professionals, with some states on the verge of having no available medical facilities to deal with the influx of new cases.

One bright note is that the rollout of both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for the virus are expected to begin before the end of the year but even so, the effects of this will likely not be felt till well into 2021 when a critical mass of people have been immunized from the disease. In the meantime, the White House and Congress need to take measures that will corral the accelerating spread of the virus without reimplementing the economically crippling shutdowns that have lead to almost 10 million more unemployed Americans and the decimation of small businesses.
