Breakdown

House Democrats today released emails from former President Trump pressuring the Justice Department to overturn his election defeat. The emails to Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen alleged widespread voter fraud and begged the DOJ to file an appeal. It mirrored the countless legal efforts launched by Trump in his final weeks in office to overturn Biden’s victory.

Several of Trump’s acolytes such as Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows also sought to ratchet up the pressure on AG Rosen. Nevertheless, AG Rosen refused to buckle despite the threat of being removed if he did not comply. The new revelations show just how desperate and frenzied the Trump team’s efforts to retain power were in their waning days in office. Although they were unable to get the support the Attorney General, Trump filed over 60 legal challenges to his defeat. None were successful, however, and the Supreme Court rejected hearing any cases pertaining to his election loss.

A Democrat committee investigating the Capitol Riot is now considering interviewing participants involved in the pressure campaign on Rosen. Carolyn B Maloney, the Democratic Chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee, slammed Biden’s predecessor:

“President Trump tried to corrupt our nation’s chief law enforcement agency in a brazen attempt to overturn an election that he lost.”

Since departing office, Trump has steadfastly maintained that the Presidency was stolen from him. Several of his staunchest supporters are still convinced that the ongoing Arizona audit will vindicate Trump’s claims. Although, most have moved on including Trump himself who has ensconced himself at Mar-a-Lago since leaving office.

Verdict

This latest scandal comes on the heels of reports the Trump Justice Department obtained mobile records from his political enemies and journalists. Prompting a number of unflattering Nixon comparisons and Democrat demands for a bipartisan investigation. Nonetheless, this latest furor is unlikely to carry any political advantage for the Democrats. Trump is as revered by the Republican base, as he is reviled by Democrats. These latest “scandals” serve only to make both sides dig in even further over the polarizing former President.
