Trump blast McConnell: “Too soon to give up…GOP must “learn to fight”

Pollemix News – 16 December, 2020
President Trump lambasted Mitch McConnell on Twitter last night following the Senate Majority Leader’s acknowledgement of Joe Biden’s win in a speech to Congress on Tuesday morning. The President has enjoyed a relatively cozy relationship with the Kentucky Senator and the two have been sympatico on a number of key policy issues, particularly the appointment of conservative justices to the bench. Thus McConnell’s decision to concede Biden had won the Presidency, in spite of ongoing litigation by the Trump campaign team, likely prompted the President’s ire at what he would view as a betrayal by the most powerful GOP member of congress.

For his part, McConnell’s concession was a signal that party elders are preparing to abandon the President’s bid to overturn the election in favor of establishing cordial relations with the incoming Biden administration and removing Trump as a potential obstacle in their effort to retain the Senate by winning the Georgia runoff elections. Immediately after congratulating Biden on his victory, McConnell also held a private caucus with Republican Senators warning them against publicly backing Trump’s efforts to overturn the election or from disputing the Electoral College tally when Congress convenes on January 6 to officially confirm Biden as President.

These combined actions have given further credence to the theory that Republicans are retreating from Trump and McConnell came under sustained assault from pro-Trump fans who branded him a RINO (Republican In Name Only) and loyalists including Trump’s lawyer Lin Wood who tweeted:
“McConnell just wants power, influence, & money. He is willing to sell America to get what he wants. McConnell is a traitor to American Patriots. His day of Judgement is coming.”

Recently pardoned General Michael Flynn retweeted in part, “We won’t fail or cower like some in the Republican Party have shown”, whilst conservative firebrand Mark Levin tweeted simply “thanks for nothing Mitch”. The backlash against McConnell will cause consternation amongst senior Republicans as the party can ill afford to lose the backing of the Trump fanbase as they seek to hold onto the two Georgia Senate seats to prevent Democrats from controlling all three branches of government.

POLL: Is McConnell recognizing Biden’s win proof the GOP is abandoning Trump?

Mitch McConnell's acknowledgement of Biden's victory seemed to point to GOP leadership deserting President Trump. Are they preparing to throw Trump overboard?
