Long-serving Judge Stephen Breyer announced he would be stepping down from the Supreme Court to allow President Biden the opportunity to seat a liberal justice to replace him. Democrats had pushed Breyer to allow a younger replacement to avoid a repeat of 2016, where Merrick Garland was blocked for almost a year by Republicans allowing Trump to appoint conservative Neil Gorsuch to the bench. Similarly, they are wary of Breyer passing away under a Republican President, like with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which would allow yet another conservative onto the court.

Republicans currently enjoy a 6-3 conservative majority in court and Mitch McConnell would relish the opportunity to replace yet another liberal judge with a conservative. Republicans are likely to take the Senate in the mid-terms this year, meaning that if McConnell can block the nomination till after then he may be able to prevent Democrats seating Biden's pick at all.

Do you think Republicans will block Biden's Supreme Court nominee?
