As President Biden begins the withdrawal of US forces in Afghanistan, a resurgent Taliban is already beginning to reclaim power. Despite 20 years, trillions in investment and the deaths of nearly 3,000 US soldiers, Afghan democracy looks set to topple in a matter of weeks, with a return to an Islamic theocracy seemingly inevitable.
Nevertheless, those opposed to America's continued involvement in foreign entanglements remain supportive of a US withdrawal from the troubled nation. Arguing that it is contingent upon Afghan's to fight for their own country and no more American blood should be spilled in the region. Conversely, some insist that Biden should reverse course and retain troops on a permanent basis to preserve democracy and stop the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.
