Texas Representative Louie Gohmert once referred to himself as “the dumbest guy in Congress” and he seemed intent on proving why today. Speaking during a House Natural Resource Committee, Gohmert left observers dumbfounded with his absurd line of questioning. Incredibly, asking whether the government had the ability to modify the orbit of Earth or the Moon.

“I was informed by the past director of NASA that they’ve found the moon’s orbit is changing slightly and so is the Earth’s orbit around the sun. We know there’s been significant solar flare activity. So is there anything the National Forest Service or BLM can do to change the course of the moon’s orbit, or the Earth’s orbit around the sun?”

The farcical question left Jennifer Eberlien from the National Forest System gobsmacked. She recovered quickly, however, responding “I would have to follow up with you on that one, Mr. Gohmert.” Her dignified response being a far cry from the ludicrous nature of the question.

Rep. Gohmert has repeatedly denied climate change and embraced conspiracy theories so his question may have been in jest. In 2015 he claimed global warming would be good as it would “warm things up” and would lead to “more plants”. He has also expressed support for infamous conspiracy theorist Alex Jones in the past and may have been pandering to that audience. Jones has repeatedly claimed the government possesses “weather weapons” which manipulate the Earth’s climate.

Verdict

It seems likely that Rep. Gohmert’s question was a clumsy attempt at humor. Or perhaps an ill-fated effort to mock Democrat efforts to push climate change legislation. If this was indeed the case, it has certainly backfired as he has been roundly mocked ever since. Perhaps the saddest indictment is that Gohmert’s intellect is so widely maligned it’s impossible to discern whether he was genuine or not.
