McConnell calls Taylor Greene a ‘cancer for the Republican Party’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tore into controversial Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green in a statement to CNN Monday, labeling her embrace of conspiracy theories and “looney lies” as a “cancer for the Republican Party.
McConnell added:
“Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party.”
Following McConnell’s statement Taylor Greene clapped back immediately on Twitter:
The real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully.
This is why we are losing our country.

Although he did not name Taylor Green directly the implication was clear and his rebuke of Greene is a clear indication that McConnell is seeking to purge the far-right wing of the party following Trump’s demise. McConnell’s statement comes on the heels of a Democrat-led resolution issued Monday that seeks to remove Taylor Greene from her two committee appointments as a consequence of her past comments calling for the execution of political opponents and calling multiple school shootings ‘false flag’ events.
McConnell’s firm admonishment of Taylor Green ups the ante on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy who will meet with Taylor Greene tomorrow to discuss the potential repercussions of her past behavior. McCarthy has been criticized for his tepid response to the scandal as he is loathe to cross former President Trump who has strongly backed Taylor Greene and called her to express his support when the scandal first broke:

The controversy over Taylor Greene’s comments has caused a major headache for the Republican Party, with the party already in the midst of a civil war between the far-right Trump faction and the establishment ‘old guard’ battling for control in the post-Trump era. Although the intra-party war was already underway, the scandal has brought things to a head and the punishment meted out to Taylor Greene will be the clearest indicator yet of who wields the real power within the Republican Party.
