Trump dumps Sidney Powell from legal team

Pollemix News – November 22, 2020
In a surprise move the Trump campaign distanced itself from lawyer Sidney Powell, who has been one of the President’s most ardent defenders in the aftermath of the 2020 Election, with a statement insisting that she was not a member of the Trump legal team:

“Sidney Powell is practising law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity.”

The statement was released on behalf of Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis who are heading up the President’s legal defense team and is a dramatic volte-face after Powell appeared alongside Ellis and Giuliani in Thursday’s heavily derided press conference, where Powell made a number of unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud but failed to provide any evidence.

Her dismissal follows a series of appearances on right wing network Newsmax where Powell accused Georgia’s GOP Governor Brian Kemp of accepting a bribe from Dominion Election systems whose voting machines were used in the state and alleged that millions of votes for Trump were altered to Biden by the Dominion voting machines. Despite repeated claims of voter fraud, however, Powell was unable to provide any substantive evidence which led to a bitter spat with Fox News host Tucker Carlson who called her out for her inability to back up her statements saying:

“We took Sidney Powell seriously, with no intention of fighting with her. We’ve always respected her work and we simply wanted to see the details. But she never sent us any evidence, despite a lot of polite requests. When we kept pressing, she got angry and told us to stop contacting her. When we checked with others around the Trump campaign, people in positions of authority, they also told us Powell had never given them any evidence to prove anything she claimed at the press conference.”

Powell’s firing is the latest twist in a chaotic post-election landscape and it remains to be seen whether she will continue to defend the President publicly or provide the “firehose of evidence” for voter fraud that she claims to be in possession of, but the abrupt nature of her dismissal points to a fall out with the Trump campaign so a bitter separation may well be on the cards.
